LAB EVIDENCE
The evidence behind
roof rejuvenation
Roof rejuvenation is built on chemistry that has restored aged asphalt for more than 20 years. Our bio-based treatment is USDA certified, independently lab-screened, backed by a written 5-year warranty per application — and proven by Virginia customers who came back five years later for their second treatment.
The short answer
Bio-based oil treatment restores flexibility, granule adhesion, and water resistance to qualifying asphalt shingles — the same chemistry that has restored flexibility to asphalt roadways for over 20 years. Applied in one visit, repeatable up to three times, and backed by a written 5-year limited warranty per application.
THE EVIDENCE
What the treatment does to a shingle
- USDA Certified Biobased Product — third-party verified certification for the actual product applied to your roof.
- Independent lab screening — an 80% reduction in granule loss, improved shingle pliability, and improved water resistance in treated vs. untreated shingles; testing summary published in full.
- Proven parent chemistry — bio-oil restoration of aged asphalt has 20+ years of use in road maintenance.
- A written 5-year limited warranty per application — enforceable terms, not marketing.
- Condition-based recommendations — every treatment starts with a free roof assessment, and we only treat roofs that qualify. When a roof is past the point of preservation, we say so and document why.
The proof that ages well: repeat customers
"Just had our second treatment done 5 years later. Roof held up beautifully and is still in almost new condition, despite being 22 years old." — Josh Bowen
"I have used Roof Renew several times, at different locations, and I firmly believe in the treatment." — Syd Mayes
"I'm a repeat customer, had a great experience 5 years ago as well as today. The roof looks like it did 20 years ago!" — William Winters

INDEPENDENT LAB RESULTS
Treated vs. untreated, ten years of weathering
PRI Asphalt Technologies (an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited materials lab) built a test roof from real 14-year-old shingles — one side treated with the bio-based rejuvenator we apply, one side left untreated — and weathered both through 3,000 hours of ASTM D4798 accelerated sun and rain, the equivalent of roughly 10 years outdoors.
9.1×
Less mass loss. After ~10 simulated years, untreated shingles had lost 9.1% of their mass. Treated shingles: just 1.0%.
Up to 5.8×
Less granule wash-off. At the ~5-year mark, untreated shingles had shed 4.08g of granules vs. 0.70g treated — 83% less. By ~10 years: 12.41g vs. 3.94g.
8.1×
Slower aging. Oxidation — the chemical process that makes shingles brittle — rose 77.9% in untreated shingles but only 9.6% in treated ones.
-31°F
Restored flexibility. Treated shingles stayed flexible to -31°F through the full test; untreated shingles never improved from -22°F.
Shingle Rejuvenator Benchmark Life-Cycle Study BBSS 01-02-01, PRI Asphalt Technologies, Inc., September 2024. Test shingles were removed from a Florida home after ~14 years of real-world exposure; the treated and untreated sides of the same test roof were weathered identically. 3,000 hours of ASTM D4798 accelerated weathering correlates to approximately 10 years of normal outdoor exposure.
YOUR OPTIONS
Rejuvenation, coating, or replacement
| Option | What it actually is | Right when |
|---|---|---|
| Bio-based rejuvenation | Oil absorbed into the shingle, reducing granule loss, restoring pliability, and improving water resistance. Repeatable up to 3 times. | Shingles are drying out but structurally sound. |
| Roof coating / sealant | A layer applied on top of shingles. Different chemistry, different failure modes; may affect manufacturer warranties. | Rarely appropriate for asphalt shingle residential roofs. |
| Replacement | New roof system. The right call when preservation is no longer the best value. | Advanced granule loss, widespread damage, chronic leaks. |
COMMON QUESTIONS
What homeowners ask about the evidence
-
Yes — on roofs that qualify. Bio-based oil treatment measurably reduces granule loss, restores shingle pliability, and improves water resistance, using the same chemistry that has restored aged asphalt roadways for over 20 years. The strongest proof is our repeat customers: homeowners on their second application five years after the first.
-
USDA biobased certification, independent lab screening of treated shingles (80% reduction in granule loss), two decades of the same chemistry in asphalt road maintenance, a written 5-year limited warranty per application, and documented before-and-after results on Virginia roofs.
-
Every project starts with a free roof assessment of granule coverage and shingle condition. Treatment is only recommended when your shingles qualify — and if replacement is genuinely the better value, that’s what we’ll recommend, with documentation either way.
